I have been thinking about it, and to say I am writing a recipe for a Caprese salad doesn’t sound quite right. A Caprese salad is so simple, it seems like merely a suggestion as for how to make use of large, fresh tomatoes and basil from the local market or garden. Primarily just three basic ingredients, Caprese salad is the trifecta of cold summer appetizers. Fresh mozzarella topped with bright tomato and aromatic basil creates this full rounded, traditional Italian flavor that proves less is more. This is also a dish that has no bounds when it comes to presentation. You can get creative with the basil, sizes of tomato and mozzarella slices, or even add a balsamic reduction. There is no wrong answer, as long as you have the main ingredients you will produce this timeless taste. Enjoy this by itself or try it atop of some thick, crusty bread.

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 Large Heirloom Tomato
  • 1 Large Fresh Mozzarella Ball
  • Fresh basil
  • Olive oil
  • Sea salt
  • Pepper

DIRECTIONS

  1. Slice the tomato and mozzarella into even 1/2-inch slices
  2. Arrange in an alternating pattern on a plate and top with basil. Drizzle olive oil and sprinkle with salt and pepper to taste.
